Banks will face penalties if they fail to curb “irresponsible” pay policies, the British Chancellor Alistair Darling said today.

Under government proposals, the British Financial Services Authority watchdog will report annually on whether remuneration practices are likely to lead to a build-up of risk in the financial system.
