GM prepares for bankruptcy announcement

General Motors, which turned the concept of a “car for every purse and purpose” into a global icon, will file for bankruptcy protection today, US government sources said.

The government plans to take a 60% ownership stake in the Detroit company, said a congressional official briefed on the plan.
