European car sales continued their year-long slide last month with only government handouts preventing a steeper fall, figures out today show.

The European car manufacturers’ association ACEA said sales fell 9% in March compared to a year ago, despite government incentives to buyers in Germany, Italy and France. It was the 11th month in a row of declining sales.
