The US government is suing BP Exploration’s Alaska operation, claiming the oil giant broke clean air and water laws with two major spills in 2006.

The writ, filed yesterday in US District Court in Anchorage, accuses the company of illegally discharging more than 200,000 gallons of crude oil from pipelines on to the North Slope.
