The US government today called for more powers to help struggling banks amid signs of a more sober assessment of its bailout scheme from world markets.

The FTSE 100 Index lost all of the 2.9% gain seen yesterday as banks suffered a reversal of fortunes as investors paused to take stock of the US Treasury's plan to free up the frozen credit market.
