The FTSE 100 Index dragged itself back from fresh six-year lows today as gains for oil stocks offset a volatile session for banks.

Lloyds Banking Group reversed a 14% fall to finish ahead as investors digested details of the weekend bailout, although Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC lost ground.
