Toyota Motor Corp is reportedly halting plans to build new factories in Thailand and Russia to cope with faltering demand amid a global recession.

The Sankei newspaper said Japan’s top carmaker had been planning to establish an engine plant in Thailand in 2010. The paper did not quote a source for its report.

It said the Japanese car giant will halt a plan to build a new car factory in St Petersburg.
