The $700bn (€559bn) rescue package for the US economy will not be used to buy troubled assets, US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said today.

Mr Paulson said it had become clear that purchasing troubled assets “would take time to implement” and the United States had decided instead to opt for direct purchases of equity in banks in a bid to get credit flowing again.
