A six-session winning run for the FTSE 100 Index looked set to end today after European markets suffered losses of around 2%.

The declines were in contrast to the performance of markets overnight, with Wall Street stocks enjoying their biggest election day gains since 1984 on expectations last night of a decisive poll outcome.
