The state of the global economy wreaked havoc on Irish shares this evening with the ISEQ index plummeting 13%, down 493 points to 3,291.52 by market close.

After another turbulent day on the markets worldwide with a series of US and European bank failures, and debate on the $700bn (€487bn) rescue package for the United States’ economy continuing, the ISEQ suffered a record one-day fall.
