Survey: Third of workers 'ready to quit'

Recession-spooked workers are ready to quit their jobs rather than be sacked by their boss, a survey found today.

The study of 400 Irish employees claims rising unemployment is fostering a climate of fear in workplaces as well as hitting productivity and morale.

One-third of those interviewed said they wanted to leave their current employer and were ready to go if an opportunity arose.

The survey by communications trouble-shooter Insidedge also found 33% 'actively distrust' or have 'low trust' in their employer.

Insidedge expert Brenda Boal believes employers need to engage more with their staff and keep them informed – especially during an economic downturn.

“Change, whether it involves downsizing or cutbacks, can impact staff badly,” she said.

“This isn’t the time to keep staff in the dark – it’s time to come clean and start a dialogue with staff to help build confidence and a clear focus on the future.”

The survey polled 400 employees in large and small businesses, as well as public sector staff.

Some 90% of those interviewed said that 'open honest communication' from their boss had a major impact on their job satisfaction, morale and desire to stay with the firm.

Eight out of 10 staff in both the public and private sectors in Ireland said that improved communication would positively increase their trust and commitment to their employers.

Ms Boal said the survey was conducted just as the credit crunch was beginning to bite.

“Since then we have seen a further decline in trust and increasing concern about the quality of leadership and communications among employees through our work in the US, Europe, UK and here in Ireland.

“In these difficult economic times, employers can take positive action by listening more seriously to their staff, communicating with them often and honestly, and staying focussed, which will ultimately lead to greater success for everyone.”

US-owned Insidedge, which recently opened offices in Dublin and Belfast, also has bases in London, New York, Chicago and Dallas.
