UK holiday giants TUI Travel and Thomas Cook were experiencing strong gains today as investors digested the collapse of rival operator XL.

The companies’ shares were up 6% and 7% respectively – placing them among the FTSE 100 Index’s biggest risers – after the demise of what was the UK’s third biggest holiday firm.
