Fashion chain French Connection today said it had slipped further into the red despite “strong momentum” from its womenswear lines.

Like-for-like ladieswear sales grew 8% in the UK and Ireland, and in North America, but overall turnover was “broadly flat” as menswear continued to disappoint.

The group said pre-tax losses had widened to £3.5m (€4.4m) in the six months to July 31 – compared with £2.5m (€3.1m) a year earlier – as margins were squeezed by higher costs.

Chairman Stephen Marks added: “It would appear that the economic environment is unlikely to improve in the short term.”
