A computer glitch paralysed the London Stock Exchange for nearly seven hours today, wiping out trading during one of the busiest days of the year.

Traders and investors hoping to cash in on the bail out of US mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were left blind when the LSE shut down share trading at 9.15am. Officials were only able to restart the system at 4pm.
