A Tesco customer who is being sued by a delivery driver claiming he injured his ankle on the man’s driveway today described the situation as “a disgrace”.

Paul Singleton, 40, from North Yorkshire in England, received a letter from the driver’s solicitor which said he was being sued for failing to maintain his driveway to a satisfactory standard.

Mr Singleton said the driver went over on his ankle while delivering groceries to his home in April this year but was unhurt and described the incident as “insignificant”.

He said: “The driver said: ’I’ve gone over on my ankle’ and I asked him if he was OK and he said: ’I’m fine’. I remember it happening but it was so insignificant. Then he delivered groceries up and down the driveway about six times.”

Mr Singleton, an estate agency manager, said Tesco should not allow its staff to sue customers.

“I just think it’s a disgrace,” he said. “Tesco shouldn’t allow their drivers to take action against their customers. It’s fundamentally wrong. They should be able to cover it, it shouldn’t be down to the customer.”

But the supermarket today said they were not supporting the actions of the delivery driver and were trying to sort out the problem with Mr Singleton, who said he had received an apology from the manager of a store in York.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We do not support this claim and do not think that it is appropriate for our customer to be sued.

“We are contacting Mr Singleton to reassure him of our intention to resolve the issue without inconveniencing him further.”
