Jamaica turns to ethanol to reduce oil dependence

Jamaica will start selling ethanol-blended fuel by the end of the year to reduce its dependence on oil.

Energy Minister Clive Mullings says petrol mixed with 10% ethanol will be sold in petrol stations across the island. The parishes of Clarendon, St Catherine, St Thomas and Portland will be among the first to sell the blend.

The €2.7m project also includes construction of a storage facility. Mr Mullings said in that the government will mandate island-wide usage of the fuel by April 2009.
