Ruling due on Beamish take-over

The Competition Authority may rule by Friday on the deal which could see Heineken gain ownership of Beamish & Crawford.

Scottish & Newcastle, owners of Cork-based Beamish & Crawford, will today be formally taken over by Heineken and Carlsberg in a deal worth €10bn.

Time was called today on the 250-year-old Edinburgh-based brewer when it fell into the hands of the Dutch and Danish beer companies.

Under the deal it is proposed that Heineken, the bigger of Cork’s two breweries, will get Beamish as part of the transaction.

However, the move by Heineken to take over Beamish has been referred to the Competition Authority over concerns that the Irish beer market might be dominated by the Dutch company and Guinness owner, Diageo.
