Housing sector drags FTSE down

London’s blue chip shares retreated into the red today as stocks were hit by bad housing market news on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the UK, housebuilder Persimmon sparked a major sell-off in the sector after providing further evidence of the property slowdown.
