The FTSE 100 Index surged above the 6000 mark today as trading was boosted by further big gains for financial stocks.

A 27% rise in annual profits for Asian-facing bank Standard Chartered buoyed domestic rivals and insurance stocks, sending the blue chip index past the psychological benchmark.
