The FTSE 100 Index lost ground today as high oil prices and weak banking stocks cast a shadow over London trading.

A poor start for New York’s Dow Jones Industrial Average, reflecting more economic worries in the United States, saw the Footsie end the session 73.3 points down at 5893.6, a drop of more than 1%.
