Help at hand for cash-strapped consumers
Cash-strapped consumers suffering post-Christmas debt will be urged today to seek advice and assistance.
The Money Advice and Budgeting Service (Mabs) is warning people in financial difficulties to seek help.
Personal borrowing in Ireland was at record levels last Christmas, with households expected to spend an average €1,400 on the festive season – up 6.9% on 2006.
Researchers have previously revealed that 39% of people at post offices on Welfare Payment days were in the grip of moneylenders.
Social and Family Affairs Minister Martin Cullen will launched the organisation’s warning.
Mabs is also reminding shoppers they can benefit from help through its 53 offices around the country, its website (www.mabs.ie), and through its lo-call telephone helpline, 1890 283438.
