UK: Report warns of concern over investment in journalism

Media employers are putting quality journalism under threat by failing to match spending on new technology in the amount they invest in staff, a new report said today.

A Commission on Multimedia Working set up by the National Union of Journalists found “widespread concern” about the impact of new media working on journalistic standards.

Months of consultation with journalists found that “significant” sums of money spent on new technology had not been matched by investment in journalism.

The report voiced concern about the impact on professional standards of media convergence and the growth of news on the internet.

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “Journalists from all sectors of the industry are excited about the possibilities but concerned about the pressures that come from under-resourced moves to multimedia working.”
