Chile has urged Britain to respect a 1959 treaty that bans extracting fuels in the Antarctic.

The statement from the Chilean government came after Britain said on Wednesday it was preparing a claim for sovereign rights covering gas and oil resources over a wedge of the Antarctic seabed.
