An Irish company is claiming success in its efforts to generate electricity from wave power.

Wavebob has been testing a prototype device off the Galway coast for the past 18 months.

It now says the machine, which floats on the surface of the water, has managed to produce power from the waves.

Wave power is regarded as a potential source of renewable energy, but nobody has yet managed to deploy a commercially viable system.
