Weaker banking stocks and a reversal of recent gains for mining companies meant the FTSE 100 Index languished in negative territory today.

The Footsie was 62.2 points lower at 6403.7 by 11.15am, following a 60-point fall on Wall Street's Dow Jones Industrial Average amid concerns over the impact of tight credit conditions on major financials such as Citigroup and JP Morgan.
