Latest iPod unveiled

Apple unveiled its latest version of the iPod today which features wireless internet access and a web browser.

Based on the new iPhone, but without the mobile phone function, the iPod Touch can be used for storing photos, music, videos and other digital data.

It features the same 3.5-inch, touch-screen display as the iPhone, on which light finger touches allow the user to scroll through menus, and use two fingers to resize pictures.

The wireless internet access and the Safari web browser, including the Google and Yahoo search engines, offers access to the popular YouTube video-sharing website.

An 8GB version will cost $299 (€219) and the 16GB version will cost $399 (€292).

It will be shipped worldwide starting later this month.

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc, said: “It’s one of the seven wonders of the world – it’s just incredible.”

Mr Jobs also unveiled the new iPod Nano, which features a 2.5-inch screen for watching movies and playing built-in games.

“It’s incredibly tiny. It’s incredibly thin,” he said.

The Nano features a 320-by-240-pixel screen with 24 hours of audio playback.

“We think it’s really, really beautiful.”

The new Nano will come in a 4GB version for $149 (€109), and an 8GB version for $199 (€145).

In a press conference at its California headquarters, Apple also announced it will be selling ring tones for the iPhone and ring tones from more than 500,000 songs available on iTunes will go on sale next week.
