The London market dived below the psychologically important 6,000 mark today as investors rushed to offload stocks amid continued credit woes.

The FTSE 100 Index tumbled 165.2 points to 5944.1, led by losses on Wall Street last night following concerns that some US lenders were having trouble securing short-term loans.
