Heathrow cargo workers strike

Cargo workers at Heathrow airport staged a strike today in a row over pay, with further walkouts planned unless the dispute is resolved.

Around 40 employees of Nippon Express walked out for 24 hours and will step up the dispute with a 48-hour stoppage from Friday if there is no deal.

Kevin Hall, a regional official of the Unite union, said from a picket line set up at the airport: “We have done everything we can to settle this dispute fairly for our members and in line with the agreements we have with the company, but we have been met by a brick wall.”

The union said it wanted the company to agree to hold talks at the conciliation service Acas.
