Pound hits new high against dollar

The pound charged to new 26-year highs against the dollar today as the US currency weakened amid further fears over America’s economy.

The pound reached its highest level against the dollar since the beginning of April 1981 – at more than 2.03 dollars – following persistent concerns over the high-risk US mortgage market.
