Government warned to reduce reliance on foreign oil

Experts are warning the Government about the need for urgent action to reduce Ireland's reliance on foreign oil.

International oil prices have risen by around 20% since the start of this year and are expected to rise further before the end of 2007.

Ireland currently relies on oil for 85% of its energy needs and experts say this leaves the country particularly exposed to rising prices.

Paul Harris from Bank of Ireland says the Government needs to actively promote alternative sources like wind and wave-power.
