Woolworths makes positive start to year

British retail chain Woolworths has boosted hopes of a long-awaited revival in its retail business after it said it had made a "solid start" to the year.

The company said profit margins on the high street were "substantially ahead" of the previous year as better products prevented the need to mirror last year's cut-price clearances.
