A consortium headed by Royal Bank of Scotland is likely to announce details of a takeover offer worth £49bn (€66bn) for Dutch bank ABN Amro tomorrow.

The move by RBS and its partners, Santander of Spain and Fortis of Belgium, will rival ABN’s agreed merger with Barclays, worth £45bn (€66bn).
