The ISEQ index of Irish shares tumbled by 133.29 points today to settle at 9467.95 in a day of heavy losses for some blue chip companies.

The financials bore much of the brunt of the mood around the Exchange. Allied Irish Bank suffered the biggest loss, slumping 53c to €22.33, with Bank of Ireland not far behind, plummeting 50c to €15.66. Irish Life & Permanent also endured a heavy loss, falling 41c to €19.39. Anglo Irish Bank escaped relatively unscathed, dropping 17c to €16.42.

Today’s news of a decline in house prices saw confidence in construction firms dwindle, with CRH falling 40c to €31.90. Grafton was also in the red, sliding 22c to €10.75.

There was little movement in the market overall - there was no significant gains, but some notable losses. This included DCC (down 44c to €24.96) and Elan (down 20c to €10.28).

Ryanair was down 12c to €6.10, with rival Aer Lingus unchanged at €3.13.
