Oil giants BP and Royal Dutch Shell were on the front foot today after a rise in the price of crude oil, helping buoy London’s blue-chip share index.

The FTSE 100 Index advanced 9.6 points to 6426 in mid-morning trading, boosted also by an upbeat overnight close on Wall Street.
