Data watchdog investigates mortgage brokers

The Data Protection Commissioner has launched an investigation into the practices of some mortgage brokers which were uncovered in last night's Prime Time Investigates programme.

The commissioner met with associations representing brokers this morning to discuss the alleged tricks used to inflate the prices paid on houses.

He says mortgage brokers must be aware that the alleged passing of personal financial information by brokers to estate agents is illegal under Irish law.
