BATU conference highlights underpayment of migrant workers

The problem of widespread underpayment of migrant workers in the building industry is the main focus of union BATU's annual conference today.

The Building and Allied Trade Union claims workers, mainly from Eastern Europe, are being conned by rogue subcontractors.

Union spokesperson Denis Farrell said that there is evidence that some employers are deceiving their workers on a weekly basis.

He said: “Our members and the union would remain concerned that the issues which reached the headlines with GAMA do not get the headlines they deserve. They continue on a weekly basis.”
