Lifelong management training ‘key to maintain Irish competitiveness’

Ireland’s quarter of a million young graduates will require lifelong learning for management to maintain the competitiveness of Ireland’s economy, according to Irish Management Institute chief executive Dr Tom McCarthy.

Speaking at the opening the Graduate Careers Fair at the RDS today, Dr McCarthy noted that Ireland is unique among developed countries in that we have managed to double the number of people at work in the last 20 years.

“A noteworthy features about our economy is that a quarter of a million graduates between the ages of 25 and 45 are now at work who do not have further degrees, many of these graduates will require further training in order to equip them for the challenges of management that will arise as they progress in their careers, and the workforce is becoming more culturally diverse,” said Dr McCarthy.

“This scale and diversity of our economy along with the challenge of managing knowledge workers will require a world class system of lifelong learning.

“The Irish Management Institute is committed to the development of a world class system of lifelong learning. This will involve the creation of an integrated system for accrediting all learning be it of short or long duration.

“In effect this will mean that all learning modules undertaken will accumulate as credit in your personal accreditation bank. At its most developed this will facilitate more efficient progress towards advanced standing, including the achievement of an MBA, while continuing to work full time.”
