WH Smith boss Kate Swann today said the revival of the British retailer was marginally ahead of schedule, despite the impact of “subdued” trading conditions.

Ms Swann said the decision to sacrifice sales growth in favour of higher margin business, particularly in stationery and books, was paying off, but added that the key Christmas trading period would be tough.
