Meteor announce new roaming rates

Mobile phone operator Meteor today officially announced that it is to abolish all roaming charges for pre-pay customers while receiving calls in the North and the UK.

Meteor is now the only network in the Republic to completely abolish all charges of this type, the company claimed.

Minister for Communications Noel Dempsey was on hand to welcome the move, which will come into effect on September 26.

Speaking at the official launch today, Meteor chief executive Robert Haulbrook said: “Although we do not have a network in the North or the UK, we are able to give our customers the best deal possible through our partnership with T-Mobile UK.

“These new roaming rates reflect our commitment to our customers, and our resolve to drive down prices in the Irish mobile market.”

“The introduction of our Northern Ireland and UK roaming rates is yet again proof positive that Meteor is bringing competition to the mobile market, while providing better value roaming rates to its customers”.

The company is also introducing an SMS flat rate of 20c for bill-pay and pre-pay customers travelling to the UK. In order to avail of these better value roaming rates, customers will need to select T-Mobile UK when roaming in the North and the UK.

Meteor now boasts more than 700,000 customers and a 16% market share, when compared to other operators.
