Quinn Direct to create 1,000 new jobs

Up to a thousand new jobs are being created in the insurance sector.

Quinn Direct today announced the creation of up to a thousand new jobs in the insurance sector.

The company will initiate a major expansion of its operations to Navan in Co Meath where its European headquarters is to be established.

Seven hundred positions will be based there and the remainder in Blanchardstown and Cavan.

But it's unlikely any of the staff will be unionised.

Gerry Shanahan from Amicus says the banking and insurance union has 10,000 members but none of them work for Quinn.

"Under the constitution we do have the right to join a trade union," he said.

“But there's no requirements for that employer to negotiate with that union or to observe representations from that union unlike all of the other EU states."
