Regulator to respond to taxi-drivers’ talks request

The Taxi Regulator, Ger Deering, is expected to respond today to a request from taxi-drivers for further negotiations on a planned new fare structure.

Thousands of mainly Dublin-based drivers have already held two one-day stoppages to protest at the changes, which will see them lose luggage charges and the special pick-up fee at Dublin Airport.

They are also threatening to take further action during the upcoming Ryder Cup.

The drivers claim their views on the matter are being ignored, but Mr Deering has already insisted that the changes follow an extensive consultation process in which all interested parties were invited to participate.

The taxi unions, however, are demanding one-on-one negotiations with the regulator.
