Plant hire group Ashtead today agreed to buy a major US competitor for $1bn (£550m/€804.81m).

The Surrey-based firm, which operates as A-Plant and Tool Hire Shops in the UK, said the acquisition of NationsRent will make it the third largest rental group in the US and the second largest on a global basis.
