HSA in new push to keep the young safe in the workplace

The Health and Safety Authority is launching a new campaign in an attempt to keep young people safe from injury in the workplace.

Over a quarter of all accidents in the workplace happen to employees between the ages of 15 and 24.

Last year six young people died as a result of work related injuries

Robert Roe, of the Health and Safety Authority, said it was up to employers to make sure their staff are operating in a safe working environment.

“Employers need to recognise, and around now is a good time to look at it because people will be coming in for the summer holidays maybe and it might be their first time at work, so employers shouldn’t assume that they know what’s required and employers should bring the safety statement to their attention and they should ensure that they have the proper equipment and the proper instruction to do their job safely,” he said.
