The National Roads Authority (NRA) is worried about the effect of big business parks on the road network.

The NRA is predicting long traffic jams and queues onto the motorway once the IKEA store opens in Ballymun.

Planners at Fingal County Council have also expressed concern.

The Swedish company is proposing to build a 30,000 sq metre outlet in Ballymun, which would employ 500 people and create another 100 outsourced jobs.

NRA spokesman Sean O'Neill says such projects put huge pressure on the surrounding roads.

“The NRA is responsible for 6% of the national road network but 40% of the country's traffic is on it,” he said. “We're trying to protect that 6% to make sure that we don't diminish a major investment that the country has made in building a national road network.”
