Shoppers have long viewed low-denomination coins as little more than a nuisance, but soaring copper prices made rummaging around the backs of sofas a little more worthwhile today.

The price of copper has risen so high that British 1p and 2p pieces are now more valuable on the commodities market than on the high street.
