The FTSE 100 Index slipped into the red today as it gave up early gains which had seen it power through the 6000 mark.

The FTSE 100 Index slipped into the red today as it gave up early gains which had seen it power through the 6000 mark.

The Footsie gained almost 40 points in the first hour of trading as investors reacted to news that Prudential had rejected a takeover offer from Norwich Union owner Aviva.
