Stadium steward graduates hailed by Ahern

Stadium stewards today graduated from the first Irish training course in the sector.

The FETAC-certified awards were organised by sporting organisations the GAA, the FAI and the IRFU.

The first 26 graduates were today presented with their certificates by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern at a ceremony at Croke Park.

The course at Killester College of Further Education included modules on professional responsibilities, ground regulations and emergency drills.

It began in July 2005 and also draws on the expertise of the Garda Siochana, the Ambulance Service and Dublin Fire Brigade.

Mr Ahern said: “Stewards play an integral role in the operation of all stadia. It takes a great deal of experience, skill and judgment to work effectively in the role.”

GAA president Sean Kelly stressed that health and safety wre priorities at all sports events today, especially with the increase in crowds and the need to deal with a wide range of different situations.

“We rely heavily on our stewards at all games. We felt it was essential they were given the training to deal with any and every situation that could and often does arise,” he said.
