Bewley's announce Fairtrade switch

Bewley’s Grafton St café is to switch to serving only Fairtrade-certified coffee from tomorrow.

Bewley’s said today that customers at its Grafton St café drink more than one million cups of coffee annually.

Marking the occasion, which is timed to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight, passers-by will be presented tomorrow with free Fairtrade coffee by Bewley’s.

Fairtrade is a mechanism which guarantees coffee farmers a minimum price and a premium, whatever the fluctuations of the world coffee market. Bewley’s has committed to the continuing expansion of its Fairtrade-certified coffee purchasing programme.

Bewley’s Fairtrade coffee comes from the Soppexxca Co-operative Farming Alliance in Nicaragua. Soppexxca is a Fairtrade certified group of 650 small coffee growers who are part of 15 co-operatives in the Matagalpa region.
