British investor David Montgomery said today he has expanded his German newspaper business with the purchase of a Hamburg-based daily.

Montgomery, former chief executive of the Mirror Group PLC, bought the tabloid-style Hamburger Morgenpost from its publishers Ernst Barlach and Josef Depenbrock, a joint statement said.

The price was not released.

The deal still needs approval from competition regulators.

Montgomery’s Mecom Group PLC and investment firm Veronis Suhler Stevenson broke into the German media market in late 2005 with the purchase of the Berliner Zeitung and Berliner Kurier dailies.
