The European Union took new legal steps against Microsoft today to ensure better compliance with its 2004 antitrust ruling, threatening fines of up to €2m a day if the software giant does not meet its demands.

The European Union took new legal steps against Microsoft today to ensure better compliance with its 2004 antitrust ruling, threatening fines of up to €2m a day if the software giant does not meet its demands.

Microsoft immediately retorted that the EU Commission and a trustee monitoring the case had failed to take proposals it made last week fully into account before taking the action, adding it would contest the measure under EU law.
